Charge for the Librarians for Literacy Nation Standing Committees
Mission:
The Librarians for Literacy Nation Committee is charged with collaborating with the Executive Board of Literacy Nation to further the organization's mission of promoting the visibility and recognition of independent authors and illustrators in libraries nationwide. The committee’s primary goal is to elevate the work of indie creators, fostering connections between authors, illustrators, and the library community, while supporting the development of library collections that reflect the diversity and creativity of independent literature.
Responsibilities:
- Promote Indie Authors and Illustrators:
The committee will work closely with the Executive Board to design programs and events that increase awareness of independent authors and illustrators within the library world. This includes curating resources, organizing initiatives, and identifying opportunities for indie authors to engage with libraries.
- Review and Curate the Annual Indie Booklist:
The committee will play a pivotal role in reviewing books written by independent authors and illustrators. This includes selecting and compiling the Annual Top Ten Indie Booklist, which highlights notable works to recommend for collection development in libraries across the country. The committee is tasked with ensuring these selections reflect a diverse range of genres, voices, and themes that align with the needs and interests of library patrons.
- Indie Book Reviews and Recommendations:
In addition to curating booklists, the committee will be responsible for writing detailed reviews of indie books that can be distributed to librarians, publishers, and library organizations. These reviews will serve as a guide for library professionals in selecting indie titles for their collections, ensuring the inclusion of high-quality, diverse works in library holdings.
- Propose and Plan Events and Activities:
The committee will propose and coordinate events and activities that highlight and promote independent authors and illustrators. This could include virtual or in-person book readings, author interviews, panel discussions, writing workshops, or other activities designed to engage both library staff and patrons with the work of indie creators. These events should be coordinated with libraries statewide to maximize exposure.
- Timeline and Activity Coordination:
The committee will establish a timeline for its activities, ensuring that events, booklist releases, and other initiatives are planned well in advance. This includes proposing deadlines, determining milestones, and coordinating with other Literacy Nation committees to ensure seamless execution of activities that align with the organization's larger goals.
- Propose Additional Activities:
The committee is encouraged to propose innovative programs, collaborations, or other initiatives that further the mission of promoting indie authors and illustrators. This includes suggesting new ways to connect authors with library professionals, reach a broader audience, or support literacy through independent literature.
- Collaborate with Libraries Across the State:
A key responsibility of the committee is to collaborate with libraries across the state to promote the work of Literacy Nation and its indie author and illustrator community. This includes working with library directors, collection development staff, and programming coordinators to ensure that indie books are represented in library collections and programming.
Committee Meetings:
- The committee will meet monthly to discuss progress, review proposed events, and coordinate upcoming activities. Meetings will also be used to plan, evaluate, and refine initiatives in support of Literacy Nation’s mission.
Expected Outcomes:
- Increased Visibility of Indie Creators: A measurable increase in the visibility of independent authors and illustrators in libraries through events, booklists, and community programming.
- Comprehensive Indie Booklists: The creation of an annual, carefully curated list of indie books that are recommended for inclusion in library collections across the country.
- Enhanced Connections: Stronger relationships between independent authors, illustrators, and the library community, fostering collaboration and engagement that supports literacy and promotes diverse voices.
Reporting:
The committee will report its progress and activities to the Executive Board of Literacy Nation, providing updates on initiatives, booklists, events, and collaborations with libraries.
